May is here and it's the perfect time to plant beans in your garden. Beans are an easy crop to grow and are an excellent source of vegetable protein, fiber and nutrients. They can be planted in combination with other plants and have the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, making them an excellent choice for a permaculture garden.

Pole beans : July

How do I plant my beans?

Prepare the soil

Before planting your beans, it is important to prepare your soil surface. Use a rake to prepare a fine seedbed so that you can easily plant your beans.

Choose the ideal location

Beans need well-drained soil and sunny exposure. Choose a spot in your garden that meets these needs. Beans also like to grow in association with other plants, such as carrots or corn.

Protection from bean flies

The bean fly is a small fly that is present throughout Switzerland. The adult flies lay their eggs near the bean seeds as soon as you sow them. The larvae eat the seeds as soon as they germinate. A simple and effective way to control them is to cover the seedlings with an insect net for three weeks after sowing.

Crop rotation

Beans are part of the legume family and have the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil. This means that they leave nitrogen reserves for subsequent crops. Beans are an ideal precedent for tomatoes: planting beans this year and tomatoes next year is an excellent example of crop rotation.

Mulching

Mulching is a great way to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. Use organic materials such as dead leaves, straw or hay to cover the soil around the bean plants. This also helps protect the plants' roots from direct sunlight.

Climate

Beans like mild to warm temperatures, between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, and they do not tolerate temperatures below zero degrees Celsius. So be sure to plant your beans in an area where there is no risk of a late frost.

In addition to temperature, beans also need plenty of sunlight to grow and thrive. Be sure to find a location with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, and they will reward you with a bountiful harvest

What about on the balcony?

Some bean varieties have deep roots and require a large container to grow properly. So not all varieties can be grown on your balcony!

For optimal growth, we recommend planting dwarf beans, such as Yellow wax bean or Garden luck. As for string beans, the Blue-podded Muotathaler will also find its place on your balcony.

Fagioli a stelo : Luglio

Come seminare i fagioli?
