Barley
Hordeum vulgare
Barley is one of the oldest grains and is a basic component of whiskey and beer. As Grisons barley soup or as animal feed, it is highly nutritious. Barley grows rapidly and is an ideal green manure. It can be grown as a mixed culture with lentils and peas. Smoothies from barley grass contain valuable nutrients and are used as “super foods”. Height ranges from 90–120 cm.
Growing instructions
Sow in early March in weed-free, rather poor soil. No compost or fertilizer should be added; otherwise the crop suffers and the grain may lodge. Space rows at 15 cm or sow by broadcasting. Harvest in late June to early July. Cut the grain and bind into sheaves to let dry.
