Columbine
Aquilegia sp.
Their feathery flowers light up with pastel colours from pink to purple. Their shape brings daydreams of flying birds, which is why their Latin name Aquilegia comes from the word for eagle. It blooms only for a short time, but when it does, it adds new flower shapes and textures to the garden. Height reaches 40-70 cm. As with other members of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), the leaves, flowers, and seeds are toxic. Therefore, it should not be eaten.
Germination of these seeds can be complicated.
Growing instructions
Sow into seedling trays in late February in a warm place. Transplant into the open field from mid-May at a distance of 30 cm. Direct seed into the field beginning in April. This species has naturally varying germination rates.
