Butternut, die sich für Kuchen und andere Süssspeisen eignen, dann festfleischige, wie der Hokkaido, die im Geschmack an Marroni erinnern. Eine Spezialität ist der Steirische Oelkürbis, aus dessen Samen das berühmte Öl gepresst wird. Kürbisse sind dankbare Gartenkumpane: gibt man genug Kompost und Wasser, fährt man reiche Ernte ein.
