composite plants, daisy family Tagetes

Dyer's-marigold (annual) tagetes

These plants grow to 60 cm high. The big, bright, yellow-orange flowers grow on these tall plants that are rather shunned by slugs. So they are easy to cultivate. The flower petals can be dried, pulverized and used as a natural food colouring for pastries.

Sow in April into small pots and transplant into the open field in mid-May. Frost-free cultivation is necessary. Attention: Slug damage can occur although this variety is often avoided by slugs. Tagetes may not only be used as a garden bed plant, but also strategically planted between vegetables for when soil is depleted.

Simple and easy, mixed (annual) tagetes

In English they are affectionately called marigold—stirring images of Mother Mary and gold. But here, Tagetes are somewhat neglected—wrongly so! The different colours in our mix of golden yellow through brownish red to orange bring shimmer and shine to the garden. Height reaches up to 30 cm. Flowers bloom from June to October.

Sow in April to small pots and from mid-May into the open field. Frost-free cultivation is necessary. Attention: Snails can cause damage. Tagetes may not only be used as a garden bed plant, but also strategically planted between vegetables for when soil is depleted.
