Shelling peas, Capuchin

Pisum sativum var. medullar
https://www.zollinger.bio/web/image/product.template/1037/image_1920?unique=25eb0ef

With its violet pods, this pea catches everyone’s attention and then tastes great too; thus validating their interest. It is also very hardy and filling. Unfortunately, it has almost been forgotten by growers which is a shame since all who grow it love it. It grows up to 2 m high with both violet flowers and pods. The peas can be used fresh or dried and used in soups.

Growing instructions

Sow from March to April. Space rows at 40–60 cm with 2–3 cm between each single seed at a depth of 5 cm. Alternatively, space circular plantings of 8–10 seeds at 40 cm. Seeds must be protected from birds. Pound in a branched stake in the centre of the circle for plants to climb up. If sown into rows, trellis plants with twine or wire on both sides. Harvest from June and onwards.
