Farmers tobacco comes from Central America. It is less demanding than today’s processed Virginia tobacco, and therefore, was cultivated more often in the past. It is hardly used today since it has been overrun by industrial products. Beware, this is strong stuff! Formerly, a cold-water extract was prepared from the leaves to make an effective insecticide. It blossoms to a greenish yellow.
Sow into seedling trays in April. Transplant into the field in May at 30 ✕ 30 cm spacing. It sends up its yellow blooms from July to September.
