Germination tests and seed storage - 01. November 2021
There’s nothing more frustrating than preparing the plot, sowing, watering, and dreaming of an abundant crop. But then it just doesn't grow! Was is the weather? Slugs? Or perhaps the quality of the seeds?
We are committed to providing you with only the best seeds, and in order to be able to do so in good conscience, we regularly carry out standardised germination tests in our laboratory. Twice a year, 50-100 seeds of each variety are placed on a moist filter paper in a test box. Kept in a controlled atmosphere, we allow them to germinate, which allows us to assess the quality of the seeds. On average, germination rates are between 95-100%!
Test the quality of your stock too!
If you have seeds from the past year left and they were stored in good conditions, it is likely that they will still be usable. Simply run a germination test to be sure!
Put a filter paper (e.g. coffee) in a clean jar or container. Wet it slightly. The soil must be damp but not drenched! Next, put a few seeds on using tweezers or wet toothpicks. Close the container and check regularly if the paper needs to be re-moistened. Keep your test at a temperature of least 20°C and exposed to indirect light. Depending on the varieties, germination can be observed after 2-14 days.
Useful tip: Store your seeds well
The world record is impressive: in Israel, scientists managed to germinate a date seed over that was over 2000 years old!
Our seeds will probably not last as long, but if they are kept dry, protected from light and mice, and in a cool place (10-15°C), you will be able to keep most seeds for 2-4 years. Onion, leek, and carrot seeds should be used in 1-2 years.
We advise you to keep your seeds in an airtight jar or container. Simply add a little dry rice to absorb any excess moisture!
