A l’automne

Warum sollte man Stauden zurückschneiden?

Wann sollte man Stauden zurückschneiden?

A flowering perennial bed is an eye-catcher in the garden. Gardeners want to keep this bloom as long as possible. Fall pruning extends the life of perennials.

Why prune perennials?

Most perennials grow with little maintenance. However, regular maintenance such as removing weeds and deadheading should not be overlooked. Regular maintenance and proper pruning of perennials will ensure that they continue to bloom, as they will bloom again if pruned properly after the main bloom. Pruning can also influence the number of flowers.

Autumn is the perfect time to prune perennials. However, we recommend that you do not prune all the plants, in order to keep your flowerbeds in all their splendor, even in winter.  A bed of perennials is likely to attract attention all year round, provided it is well laid out. Remember that plants grow even if you don't prune them.

However, there are advantages to pruning perennials. Proper pruning allows you to better direct their growth, rejuvenate shoots, cut off diseased areas and encourage future flowering.

Faded perennials should be cut back to about 10 centimeters from the ground. This way, the plants can resume their growth next spring with great energy and strength. Among the varieties of perennials that need to be cut back in the fall are hollyhocks or gaillardes. This will help them to grow even more strongly the following year.

But many gardeners also want to prune perennials to keep their garden tidy during the winter. If you attach a lot of importance to the visual aspect, it is preferable to think, even before arranging a bed of perennials, about the optimal combination that will allow you to enjoy these varied plants all year long.

Be careful! When pruning perennials, care must be taken not to cut off the winter buds, since these are the ones that allow the plant to grow back the following season. Caution is therefore required to avoid disappointment in the spring.

When to prune perennials?

There are several appropriate times to prune perennials. Although these plants have no particular growing problems, they still need to be cared for by the amateur gardener.

During flowering

Pruning may be necessary during flowering. This is called pinching perennials. The gardener must remove the faded flowers and make sure that the plant does not produce seeds. This way, your perennials make more flowers.

In the fall

Fall is the traditional season for gardeners to prune their perennials. This is known as cutting back the plants. The aerial stems of perennials are not needed during the winter. We prepare the plant for the cold season by removing the remains of its flowering.

Spring or fall?

Choosing to cut back your perennials in spring or fall is not really a fundamental decision. The impact is not very great. If you forget the season of pruning, you'll make up for it the next season.

If you cut back your perennials in the fall, you'll have more time for other gardening work in the spring. Another benefit is that pruning helps control plant pests and diseases. This way, your perennials will start up again in the spring in good health.

Don't wait for winter!

November is the right time to prune perennials. Indeed, if you wait too long, the plants become soft, they are covered with mud. The task is much more difficult. By pruning as early as November, you reduce the risk of accidentally cutting a new shoot.

How to prune perennials?

General method

Perennials are best pruned with sharp pruning shears. In the fall, cut all wilted perennials back to about 10 cm from the ground.

It is important that the tool is always sharp so that it can cut the perennial properly and not crush it. When pruning roses, it is essential that the scissors are clean and disinfected so as not to transmit pathogens. After use, tools should be cleaned so that the sap does not dry out. Power gardening tools should be serviced annually to ensure their safety.

If you are cutting diseased perennials, you must disinfect the tool so that you do not contaminate other plants.

What to do with the cuttings?

Can we leave the stems or branches of the shrubs in place? Yes, you can. They can provide shelter for animals and protect the soil from frost. You can also cut perennials into small pieces and put them in the compost to aerate it. However, diseased plant parts should not be thrown on the compost. If you have a mulcher, feel free to use the perennial clippings as mulch.

In autunno
